Beignets have been linked to Mardi Gras celebrations in France since the early 1500s. Introduced to the Mobile region in the 1800s by Acadians, commonly referred to as Cajuns, these fried treats were occasionally stuffed with fruit. Presently, beignets are recognized as square-shaped pastries, deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar, typically served in sets of three.
